Fans of Shondaland will already know that Shondaland and Netflix have joined forces to produce Bridgerton, a TV adaptation of Quinn's books. Each follows one of the children, with the series offering a fascinating, fictionalized look at London high society, a world filled with power, sex, romance, and betrayal. (Here's a helpful family tree.) What originally started as a trilogy grew to eight novels, plus two novellas and a collection. This is perhaps most effectively on display in Quinn's Bridgerton novel series, which, if you're not familiar, is a historical romance series following the eight children - Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth - of the late Viscount Bridgerton in Regency (early 1800s) England. Sometimes referred to as our generation's Jane Austen, The New York Times best-selling author is known for imbuing her narratives with wit, humor, and a cast of characters who while, yes, are sexy, are also smart, empowered, nuanced, and motivated by more than what the title of the genre may suggest. If you're someone who has written off the romance novel as nothing more than prototypical damsel-in-distress stories where hunky heroes come to the rescue (and offer some, comfort, shall we say) then you don't know Julia Quinn's brand of romance novels.
